Seekurico in Bilbao

129 pages it would turn out to be. The final report of the investigation into a double fatal workplace accident.
Setting off on a Monday morning with limited information to become part of an international team. The aim: to find out what led to the tragic deaths of two workers in Bilbao in the job they had been doing for 15 and almost 30 years respectively.Het bewustzijn van je drive, het achterhalen van hoe dit kon gebeuren om herhaling van dit soort dramatische en fatale ongevallen te voorkomen, zet je brein meteen op scherp.

Making a first sketch of the circumstances with the information that slowly starts to surface, consulting with the other team members, etc. to determine the joint strategy for what needs to be done on-site, reminds you why you wanted to make safety and prevention your job and how invaluable it is.

During the first meeting that evening, other questions arise that all deserve a clear answer and the determination to find one binds the team members. You also try to prepare yourself mentally for what you will find on-site the next day: the dejection of the workers there and the sight of the scene of the disaster that remained untouched.

And then you find yourself standing there. You speak English with the team and are glad that you also understand enough Spanish to get a first-hand description of what happened. You absorb everything and gradually the chronology of the events falls into place. Then the images you don't really want to see come along, but you analyse them with one aim in mind: can we make sure that this situation never happens again?

Everyone is impressed. Including you.

On Wednesday, you are back at work at home: you make sketches, articulate the protocols, list all actions, the relevant and the seemingly unimportant, and note down what happened in spite of this, but above all, you are busy translating this into the future and into people. What is necessary and at the same time feasible in terms of precautionary measures, because no directive is useful if it cannot be implemented in full without hindering the operation on the floor.

You send in the report and receive the feedback that you have grasped exactly what the others also saw. You are satisfied with your contribution, but above all you are motivated to ensure, through your observations of human activity, location and equipment and the thorough analysis of these, that people in all types of companies can return home safely after their work.
